As of April 1, 2026, 923.2 billion hryvnias were in cash circulation in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the year, the amount has decreased by 3.1 billion hryvnias, or 0.3%, which is associated with the seasonal withdrawal of cash from circulation at the beginning of the year, reports the NBU, according to UNN.
Details
According to the National Bank, out of the total amount, 913.4 billion UAH accounts for banknotes, and another 9.6 billion hryvnias for coins.
Currently, there are 2.6 billion banknotes and 15.2 billion coins in circulation (excluding commemorative and investment coins).
If calculated per capita in Ukraine, there are on average 63 banknotes and 195 coins.
In monetary terms, this is approximately 22.3 thousand hryvnias in cash per person, based on official demographic calculations used by the NBU.
The most common banknotes in circulation are those with a face value of 500 hryvnias, accounting for 25.5% of all paper money. The least common are 50-hryvnia banknotes, making up only 4.7%.
Among coins, the most common in circulation are 1-hryvnia coins, accounting for 4.7% of the total number of circulating coins, while the least common are 10-hryvnia coins, at 2.4%.
The NBU also reminded that as of March 2, 2026, banknotes with denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryvnias of old designs from 2003–2007 ceased to be legal tender. They can still be exchanged for valid coins and banknotes.
Separately, the gradual withdrawal of 10-kopeck coins, which began in October last year, continues. During this time, 4.8 million such coins have already been withdrawn from circulation. At the same time, stable demand for 50-kopeck coins remains, especially in the trade and services sector.
